Air India has rejected viral social media claims alleging that it suspended all international flights until July because of fuel shortages, calling the reports “fabricated” and “malicious” amid growing concerns over operational pressures facing the aviation industry.
The clarification comes at a sensitive time for the Tata Group-owned carrier, which is already trimming parts of its international network as rising jet fuel prices, longer flight paths and geopolitical instability in West Asia continue to disrupt airline economics globally.
In a statement posted on social media, the airline said reports claiming a complete halt of international operations were “completely false and baseless” and urged passengers to rely only on official company communication channels for operational updates.
The viral claims triggered concern among travellers after posts circulated online stating that Air India had cancelled all overseas flights until July due to fuel shortages.
Airline pushes back against misinformation
The airline moved quickly to contain speculation as the claims spread across social media platforms.
“#FakeNews Alert: Malicious and fabricated claims circulating on certain platforms alleging that Air India has cancelled all international flights are completely false and baseless,” the airline stated in its clarification, according to reporting by Hindustan Times.
The carrier also urged passengers to verify operational information directly through official airline platforms.
The online rumours emerged as several global airlines continue adjusting schedules because of the ongoing instability in West Asia, rising aviation fuel costs and restricted airspace availability.
While the viral posts were inaccurate, the speculation gained traction partly because Air India has already reduced selected international services in recent months.
International network faces operational pressure
The airline has not suspended international operations, but it has been adjusting schedules across certain routes due to mounting cost pressures.
According to previous reports cited by PTI, Air India cut more than 500 international flights across April and May as fuel prices surged following geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
The carrier has also extended the suspension of its Tel Aviv-Delhi service until the end of June because of continued regional uncertainty.
Industry analysts say airlines operating between Asia, Europe and North America have faced additional operational strain after airspace disruptions forced longer flight routings and increased fuel burn.
Key developments linked to Air India’s recent operational adjustments include:
More than 500 international flights reduced across April and May
Continued suspension of Tel Aviv-Delhi services until end-June
Rising aviation fuel prices linked to West Asia tensions
Longer operating routes caused by restricted airspace
Select international routes becoming temporarily unprofitable
The airline’s clarification therefore distinguished between targeted schedule adjustments and the false claims of a complete international shutdown.
Fuel prices and route economics reshape airline planning
The speculation also coincided with internal communications from outgoing Air India Chief Executive and Managing Director Campbell Wilson, who acknowledged the growing financial pressure facing the carrier’s international operations.
According to PTI, Wilson informed employees earlier this month that several international services had become commercially difficult to sustain because of higher fuel costs and operational disruptions.
“We have reduced some flying for April and May. A massive rise in jet fuel prices, together with airspace closures and longer flying routes, has caused many of our international flights to become unprofitable to operate,” Wilson reportedly told staff.
He further noted that the airline may continue adjusting schedules through June and July if conditions remain unchanged.
“The airspace and jet fuel price situation remains extremely challenging, leaving us no choice but to further trim schedules for June and July,” he added, according to PTI.
The airline also indicated that domestic operations have faced profitability pressures, although to a lesser degree.
Aviation industry faces wider regional disruption
Air India’s situation reflects broader challenges affecting airlines across Asia and the Middle East.
The continuing geopolitical instability in the Gulf region has disrupted aviation markets globally through:
Increased crude oil prices
Higher aviation turbine fuel costs
Temporary airspace closures
Longer international flight paths
Reduced aircraft utilisation efficiency
These pressures have forced airlines to reassess route profitability, particularly on long-haul international sectors where fuel expenses account for a significant share of operating costs.
Several global carriers have already modified schedules, reduced frequencies or temporarily suspended operations on affected routes since the escalation of tensions in West Asia.
For airlines like Air India, which are simultaneously pursuing fleet expansion and international growth, the situation has added another layer of complexity to operational planning.
Social media misinformation adds to passenger anxiety
The episode also highlights how quickly operational rumours can spread online during periods of uncertainty in the aviation sector.
Passenger reactions on social media reflected widespread concern over the possibility of abrupt international cancellations, especially during the busy summer travel season.
Some users welcomed the airline’s clarification, while others criticised the spread of misinformation around airline operations.
Aviation analysts say false claims regarding airline shutdowns or route suspensions can create confusion for passengers and add pressure on already strained customer service systems.
The incident comes as airlines globally continue navigating volatile fuel markets, shifting demand patterns and operational challenges linked to geopolitical developments.
For now, Air India continues operating its international network while selectively trimming routes affected by high operating costs and restricted airspace conditions.
The airline’s response suggests that while operational adjustments may continue in the near term, reports of a full suspension of international services remain entirely unfounded.
