The recently delivered Boeing 737-8 MAX VT-RNT of Air India Express made its maiden international commercial flight on January 17, 2026, departing from Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi with passengers and crew on board and flying to Muscat International Airport. Not only does the flight mark the commencement of the overseas service of the aircraft, but it also strengthens the airline's fleet renewal and network expansion under Tata group ownership.
The cabin of VT-RNT features several customer-centric enhancements aimed at improving passenger experience, which include ergonomically designed seats that have plenty of legroom, individual fast-charging power outlets at each seat, and larger overhead baggage bins. The aircraft features ambient mood lighting that enhances passenger comfort and creates a calmer, quieter cabin environment. These additions were noted by members of the flight crew, where onboard meals were customised with special ovens and the general spaciousness, which has been reported elsewhere about the interiors of next-generation narrowbody aircraft by Simple Flying and Aviation Week.

This is the 51st Boeing 737-8 to be inducted by Air India Express since it shifted to the Tata group and also indicates how Air India express one of the largest operators of Boeing aircraft in India with a fleet of more than 100 aircraft, including both Boeing 737 family and Airbus narrowbodies. Past aviation news articles have underscored that the airline is also in the process of doing a retrofit programme to standardise seating in all the existing Boeing 737-8 aircrafts, 50 aircraft will undergo the retrofit, which has been consistent with the product strategy.
According to Aviation News and Economic Times, Air India Express has been gradually resuming and extending services to the West Asian markets after the reopening of the airspace and the restoration of travel. One of the routes that is among the important links in the Gulf is the Delhi-Muscat route, which is essential considering the high rates of diasporic travel between India and Oman. The introduction of the VT-RNT on this route supports the trust that the airline has to roll out technologically advanced narrowbodies in its international operations, in addition to amplifying the yield potential due to increased onboard services.
The airline is also in the process of updating its branding, which makes the induction of VT-RNT consistent with that. Together with fleet renovations, Air India Express has recently introduced its Xplore More, Xpress More brand campaign, which unites the expansion of its operations with a cultural storytelling achievement, by offering such programmes as Tales of India, an aircraft tail art programme that celebrates the diversity of India. This type of branding positions the carrier in the premium segment, where image and customer perception play a key role in loyalty and choice.
The first international commercial flight of VT-RNT, a Boeing 737-8 MAX to Muscat, marks a significant step in the ongoing fleet development and route expansion of Air India Express. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), of the 1.95 billion international passengers carried worldwide in 2024, about 116.9 million (approx. 6%) chose first or business class, underscoring growth in premium segments. With VT-RNT adding capacity on Gulf sectors, where demand for upgraded service is strong, Air India Express is positioned to benefit from this shift. Continued fleet modernization, including additional aircraft with enhanced comfort, is likely to boost the airline’s appeal to business and premium travellers as the market grows toward 2047.
