Air India has removed handling charges for sports equipment on eligible domestic and international flights, offering financial relief to athletes travelling with specialised sporting gear. The revised baggage policy applies across selected fare categories and is intended to make air travel more convenient for passengers carrying sports equipment.
The announcement comes days after the Ministry of Railways eased travel rules by allowing athletes to carry javelins and other oversized sporting equipment on trains, reflecting wider efforts to improve travel accessibility for India's sporting community.
Waiver applies to select fare categories
According to an official statement issued by Air India, the waiver covers passengers travelling under the following fare categories:
- Economy Flex
- Premium Economy Flex
- All Business Class fares
The policy applies on both domestic and international flights operated by the airline.
Air India clarified that the waiver removes only the handling charge for sports equipment. Standard excess baggage charges will continue to apply if the total weight of sports equipment exceeds the passenger's permitted baggage allowance.
Move addresses a long-standing concern
The revised policy removes an additional expense faced by athletes transporting specialised equipment by air.
According to The Times of India, handling charges previously ranged between ₹2,000 and ₹2,500 on domestic routes and could reach ₹7,000 on international services, depending on the equipment and destination.
By eliminating these handling fees for eligible travellers, the airline is expected to reduce travel costs for athletes who regularly compete across India and overseas.
Wide range of sporting equipment covered
The policy is expected to benefit participants across multiple sporting disciplines.
Sports equipment commonly transported by air includes:
- Golf bags
- Cricket kits
- Javelins
- Archery equipment
Air India said the initiative is designed to make travel more convenient for customers carrying sporting gear while retaining existing baggage rules where applicable.
Positive response from sporting community
The announcement has received support from athletes.
Olympian and professional golfer Udayan Mane described the decision as "a step in the right direction". He also expressed hope that similar benefits would eventually be extended across all flight categories operating within India.
The policy addresses a long-standing request from sportspersons, many of whom travel frequently with oversized or specialised equipment that attracts additional airline charges.
Supporting sports travel
The latest baggage policy forms part of Air India's efforts to improve the passenger experience across different customer segments while maintaining existing baggage regulations.
For athletes travelling to competitions and training events, the waiver is expected to lower travel costs without altering standard baggage weight limits. As sporting participation and international competition continue to grow, measures aimed at reducing logistical barriers could make travel more accessible for professional and amateur athletes alike.
