Air India has rolled out a revised compensation and career progression package for pilots, introducing salary increases, enhanced flying incentives and new retention measures aimed at reducing attrition and strengthening its cockpit workforce.
According to reporting by The Hindu, the changes include an 8% to 15% increase in fixed pay, higher productivity-linked flying compensation and revised training allowances. The airline has also introduced fresh incentives for Boeing 737 pilots and updated promotion pathways linked to Air India Express, its low-cost subsidiary.
The move comes as Air India continues a multi-year transformation programme following its acquisition by the Tata Group, while simultaneously expanding its fleet and operations.
Pay increases target retention challenges
The revised package is designed to make Air India's compensation structure more competitive in a market where airlines are competing for experienced cockpit crew.
Following privatisation, Air India introduced a guaranteed pay model based on 40 flying hours per month in 2022. According to The Hindu, this was significantly lower than IndiGo's 70-hour guaranteed structure, contributing to pilot attrition over time.
While the 40-hour guarantee remains unchanged, the airline has enhanced earnings potential through higher fixed salaries and revised productivity pay.
Key changes include:
The revised structure is expected to boost monthly earnings for pilots who operate above the guaranteed threshold.
Training compensation revised as fleet expansion continues
Air India has also modified its training compensation policy as pilots spend longer periods undergoing qualification and transition programmes.
The airline is expanding its fleet and introducing new aircraft types, increasing the amount of time pilots spend in training rather than active flying.
Since pilot compensation is closely linked to flight hours, extended training periods can affect earnings.
Under the revised framework, training pay will be linked to the average flying hours associated with a pilot's fleet type. The change is intended to protect earnings while pilots complete mandatory training requirements.
Fresh incentives introduced for Boeing 737 pilots
A significant element of the overhaul focuses on staffing requirements at Air India Express, which has been managing pilot shortages.
For the first time, Air India has introduced a dedicated Boeing 737 fleet allowance.
According to The Hindu, the retention package includes:
The incentives are intended to encourage pilots to remain within the Boeing 737 fleet and support operational requirements at Air India Express.
Promotion pathways linked to Air India Express service
The airline has also revised career progression requirements for pilots seeking command positions.
Under the new framework, pilots aspiring to become captains will be required to complete a stint at Air India Express before becoming eligible for command.
Additional career progression measures include:
The integrated seniority structure is intended to create a clearer career pathway across the group's airline operations.
As Air India expands its fleet and network, retaining skilled pilots has become increasingly important. The latest compensation and career reforms signal a broader effort to strengthen workforce stability while ensuring the airline has the cockpit resources needed to support its long-term growth plans.
