Air India and Riyadh Air have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a strategic partnership that could significantly expand connectivity between India and Saudi Arabia while providing travellers with easier access to destinations across their combined networks.
The agreement, announced on June 4, lays the groundwork for deeper commercial cooperation between the two full-service airlines. According to statements from the carriers reported by CNBC-TV18, the partnership is intended to create more seamless travel options for passengers flying between the two countries and onward to international destinations.
The proposed collaboration comes at a time when both India and Saudi Arabia are emerging as important growth markets for global aviation, driven by increasing business activity, tourism flows and people-to-people connections.
Hubs in Delhi, Mumbai and Riyadh at the centre of plans
The MoU reflects a shared ambition to strengthen network integration using the airlines' major operating hubs.
Under the proposed framework, Delhi, Mumbai and Riyadh will serve as the key connection points linking travellers across both carriers' route networks.
Subject to regulatory approvals, the airlines plan to introduce:
- Interline agreements allowing passengers to connect across both airlines' networks
- Codeshare arrangements enabling one airline to market flights operated by the other
- Single-ticket travel bookings covering multiple flight segments
- Simplified onward connections through major hub airports
The planned arrangements are expected to make travel between India, Saudi Arabia and other international destinations more convenient by reducing booking complexity and improving network access.
Partnership extends beyond passenger travel
The proposed collaboration is not limited to passenger services.
According to the airlines, discussions will also explore cooperation in several operational and commercial areas, including:
- Reciprocal loyalty programme benefits
- Cargo operations
- Operational support services
- Digital initiatives
- Technology-led passenger experience enhancements
The broader scope of the agreement indicates that both airlines are exploring opportunities to build a long-term strategic relationship beyond route connectivity.
Such partnerships have become increasingly common across the aviation sector as airlines seek to expand network reach without launching additional direct services.
Growing aviation markets create natural alignment
Commenting on the agreement, Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Air India, described the partnership as a natural fit given the growth trajectories of both countries.
"India and Saudi Arabia are two important growth markets in global aviation today, and the scale and momentum in both countries make this a natural partnership," Wilson said.
Tony Douglas, Chief Executive Officer of Riyadh Air, said the collaboration would help deliver a more seamless travel experience while reflecting the strong economic and cultural links between the two nations.
The partnership is expected to support increasing demand from travellers visiting for business, tourism and family-related travel.
Air India noted that the agreement aligns with the growing economic, cultural and people-to-people ties connecting India and Saudi Arabia.
Air India continues alliance expansion
The latest agreement adds to Air India's broader efforts to strengthen its global partnership network following its privatisation in 2022.
According to the airline:
- Air India currently maintains 25 codeshare partnerships
- The carrier has established more than 120 interline agreements
- Its alliance network provides access to more than 1,000 destinations worldwide
The airline has increasingly focused on partnerships as part of its wider transformation strategy, allowing it to expand connectivity options without relying solely on its own aircraft and routes.
The proposed Riyadh Air collaboration would further strengthen Air India's presence in the Middle East, a region that remains one of the most important international travel corridors for Indian passengers.
Riyadh Air prepares for commercial expansion
The agreement also comes as Riyadh Air advances preparations for expanding its international operations.
The airline recently opened public sales through its website and mobile application for flights to London Heathrow Airport, with inaugural services scheduled to begin on July 1.
According to Riyadh Air, the route will offer Indian travellers connecting through Riyadh improved access to the United Kingdom and wider European destinations.
As the Saudi carrier continues to build its network, partnerships with established international airlines are expected to play an important role in attracting connecting traffic and strengthening its global footprint.
Focus turns to regulatory approvals and implementation
While the agreement remains subject to regulatory approvals, the MoU establishes a framework for future cooperation between two airlines operating in some of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets.
If implemented, the proposed interline and codeshare arrangements could provide passengers with greater network flexibility and streamlined travel options across India, Saudi Arabia and beyond. For both carriers, the partnership represents an opportunity to capitalise on rising travel demand while strengthening commercial ties between two increasingly connected economies.
