Alaska Airlines has unveiled a special FIFA World Cup 2026-themed aircraft as Seattle prepares to host matches during next year's tournament, marking the airline's role as an Official Seattle World Cup 2026 Host City Supporter in partnership with Qatar Airways.
The new livery has been applied to a Boeing 737-9 MAX, registration 985AK, and is designed to showcase Seattle's connection to one of the world's largest sporting events.
The aircraft will serve as a flying ambassador for the city in the lead-up to the tournament, carrying World Cup-themed branding across Alaska Airlines' network as preparations continue for the global football event.
Aircraft design celebrates Seattle's host city identity
According to details released by Alaska Airlines and Seattle World Cup organisers, the livery combines elements of the official Seattle Host City branding with imagery linked to the sport.
The design features the Seattle Host City logo alongside a football graphic intended to reflect the movement and energy associated with the tournament.
The aircraft also incorporates several elements tied directly to the Pacific Northwest.
Key design features include:
- A special FIFA World Cup 2026-themed livery.
- The Seattle Host City logo.
- A football-inspired design motif.
- Alaska Airlines' signature whale tail graphic.
- The message "WE ARE SEATTLE" displayed on the underside of the aircraft.
The whale tail artwork connects the aircraft to the region's maritime heritage, while the underside message emphasises the airline's longstanding association with Seattle.
Host committee highlights regional storytelling
Peter Tomozawa, Chief Executive Officer of SeattleFWC26, said the aircraft would help showcase the city and broader region to travellers across Alaska Airlines' network.
According to comments released alongside the launch, Tomozawa said the livery reflects the character of the Pacific Northwest and serves as an invitation for visitors to experience Seattle during the tournament.
The initiative forms part of wider efforts by the Seattle host committee to build awareness ahead of the competition and encourage international visitors to engage with the city and surrounding region.
Airline expands involvement beyond branding
Alaska Airlines' support for Seattle's World Cup preparations extends beyond the aircraft design itself.
The airline is participating in several community-focused programmes linked to the tournament, working with local organisations and cultural institutions.
Among the initiatives highlighted by organisers are:
- Support for a recent Blind Soccer international tournament.
- Community art projects developed with local organisations.
- Participation in a Seattle Host City flag-raising ceremony at the Space Needle.
- Collaboration with community partners including the Northwest Association for Blind Athletes and the Museum of Flight.
These programmes are designed to strengthen community engagement and broaden participation in activities connected to the tournament.
Global event offers platform for airline and city
Eric Edge, Vice President of Brand and Marketing at Alaska Airlines, said the new aircraft reflects both the airline's connection to Seattle and its growing international reach.
In remarks accompanying the launch, Edge said the design recognises the airline's hometown while highlighting connections to destinations around the world.
The project also underscores the role airlines can play in promoting major international events, particularly as host cities seek to attract visitors and showcase local culture on a global stage.
With FIFA World Cup 2026 drawing closer, the specially painted Boeing 737-9 MAX is expected to become a visible symbol of Seattle's preparations, carrying the city's World Cup identity across North America and beyond while reinforcing Alaska Airlines' role in welcoming visitors to the Pacific Northwest.
