Air India Adds 30 More Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to Fleet

Air India has placed a firm order for 30 additional Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, finalised at Wings India 2026 in Hyderabad. The company aims to accelerate fleet growth to meet rising passenger and regional travel demand. The deal will consist of 20 Boeing 737-8s and 10 Boeing 737-10s, adding to the airline's single-aisle fleet strategy, and extending its Boeing order book to nearly 200 jets of both narrow and wide-body classes. Air India CEO Campbell Wilson underlined that the acquisition is part of the carrier's long-term plan to become a global airline.

Fleet Modernisation to Address Growing Passenger Traffic

The new Boeing order is based on Air India's 2023 aircraft acquisition programme. This already saw hundreds of narrow-body and wide-body jets being established as the Tata Group-owned airline modernises its fleet and increases its network coverage. As reported by Air Data News, the remaining 737 MAX planes will play their part in sustaining the high-frequency domestic and short-haul regional flights that require fuel efficiency and reliability of operation. The deliveries will be gradual within the next few years, in line with the overall capacity growth projections of the airline.

Operational Impact and Route Deployment

The 737-8 will be used on domestic and regional routes with more frequent flights and with higher passenger carrying capacity on high-density routes. Air India will use the engines of the 737-8 that are more fuel-efficient and have lower emissions, whereas the 737-10 will be used with higher capacity in busier routes. According to The Economic Times, the reason behind this move also comprises the strategy of the airline to balance its fleet mix both to do cost-effective short flights as well as to improve unit economics in the face of increased competition from other Indian airlines.
