On 17 February 2026, Air India and the Lufthansa Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance air connectivity between India and Europe. It is based on a framework of a Joint Business Agreement (JBA) between the two companies, to bring change through coordinated route planning, commercial cooperation, joint marketing, and network integration among various carriers. The memorandum is on top of their existing relationship and is subject to regulatory and antitrust approval, as reported by The Economic Times.### Contractual Agreement & StrategyThe MoU is signed by Campbell Wilson, CEO and Managing Director of Air India, and Carsten Spohr, Chairman and CEO of the Lufthansa Group. This covers Air India, Air India Express, Lufthansa Group airlines that comprise Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, Lufthansa, and Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS).As per Air India’s official press release, the agreement is structured around four core pillars that define its operational and commercial depth. At the network level, the two groups will jointly coordinate flight schedules and route planning across priority markets. This would be to optimise bank structures, improve minimum connection times (MCTs), and reduce passenger layovers. On the commercial front, the carriers will align sales strategies, distribution channels, and pricing frameworks, alongside joint marketing programmes, enabling seamless, single-ticket itineraries across their combined networks. The framework also envisages deeper customer-experience integration, including potential alignment of frequent-flyer programmes, back-end IT systems, and shared airport services to deliver a harmonised end-to-end journey. The rollout will follow a phased roadmap, with Phase I concentrating on core markets such as Germany, Austria, Belgium, Italy, and Switzerland, followed by Phase II expansion across the wider European region and the Indian subcontinent, contingent on traffic growth and regulatory clearances.### Background: Codeshares, Market Size & Regulatory PhaseAir India and the Lufthansa Group have a strong partnership through the Star Alliance and the codeshare networks, which are already in place:* It has 29 European city routes connecting 15 cities in India to 145 destinations. This JBA framework aims to harmonize the commercial strategies and synchronize operations throughout the shared network. In accordance with the reports of The Economic Times, the agreement leverages strong growth trends after the India–European Union Free Trade Agreement, where the EU is India’s largest trading partner, accounting for nearly 25% of global GDP, with €120 billion in bilateral goods trade in 2024.### Key Aspects of the Agreement| Aspect | Detail || :--- | :--- || Signing Date | 17 February 2026 || Parties Involved | Air India Group; Lufthansa Group airlines || Agreement Type | MoU toward Joint Business Agreement (JBA) || Scope | Coordinated routes, scheduling, sales, and customer experience || Subject to | Regulatory & anti-trust approvals || Existing Codeshare | 145 routes; 15 Indian / 29 European cities |(Source: Economic Times; Lufthansa Group Newsroom; Air India Press Release)### Industry Specialist’s CommentaryAccording to Jens Flottau, the Executive Editor, Aviation Week,> “This MoU is one of the most detailed cooperation frameworks short of merger activity in the India-Europe aviation lane, which means airlines are striving to integrate route networks to compete with well-capitalised Gulf airlines.”### Discovering Connections, Capacity, and GrowthThe previous partnership between Air India and the Lufthansa Group was based on Star Alliance reciprocity. The new MoU will bring in a Joint Business Agreement that will align schedules, inventory, and commercial strategy in six Lufthansa Group airlines and the Air India Group. Provided that the JBA is approved, the coordinated capacity will grow substantially in a market that is backed by EUR120 billion of India-EU bilateral trade (2024) and fast-growing long-haul demand.### Snapshot Overview Table| Pointer | Takeaway || :--- | :--- || What | MoU for Joint Business Agreement to enhance India–Europe connectivity || How | Coordinated routes, commercial cooperation, and joint customer initiatives || Why | To deepen air connectivity and leverage trade growth post India–EU FTA |
