The ePlane Company, a Chennai-based electric aviation startup, has completed the assembly of its full-scale electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, marking a significant milestone in its journey towards certification and commercial deployment.
According to a company statement shared with Swarajya, the completed aircraft, known as e200X PT-01, brings together the platform's major subsystems into a single integrated structure and moves the programme from design and development into testing.
The milestone positions the company for the next stages of ground validation, flight testing and regulatory certification.
Prototype enters validation phase
With assembly now complete, the e200X will undergo a series of technical evaluations before taking to the skies.
The company said the aircraft will first be subjected to ground testing, during which engineers will assess its structure and onboard systems under aerodynamic and mechanical loads using specialised testing equipment.
Following successful completion of these tests, the aircraft will progress to flight testing and eventually seek Type Certification.
The achievement also serves as a manufacturing validation exercise, demonstrating that production tooling, supply chains and onboard systems can operate together at full scale.
Multi-role platform targets urban mobility
The e200X has been designed as a flexible aircraft platform capable of serving multiple use cases.
According to the company, the aircraft is being developed for:
- Passenger air taxi operations
- Urban cargo transportation
- Air ambulance services
The multi-purpose design reflects a growing industry focus on urban air mobility platforms that can support both commercial and public service applications.
The company said the aircraft has been engineered to operate using existing urban infrastructure rather than requiring extensive changes to city layouts.
Built in-house with indigenous systems
A notable aspect of the programme is the extent of in-house development undertaken by the company.
Designed and assembled at ePlane's facilities, the aircraft incorporates several key systems developed internally, including:
- Propellers
- Airframe
- Landing gear
- Battery pack
The integrated approach gives the company greater control over aircraft design and development while supporting its broader manufacturing ambitions.
According to the startup, the programme has reached the full-scale prototype stage after raising approximately $21 million, a figure it said is substantially lower than funding secured by many international eVTOL developers.
Founder outlines global ambitions
Commenting on the milestone, Prof. Satya Chakravarthy, founder of The ePlane Company, said the aircraft had been designed to meet international standards while being engineered and manufactured in India.
"We set out to build an electric aircraft to a world-class benchmark, engineered and manufactured in depth in India for the World," Chakravarthy said in the company's statement.
He added that the aircraft's compact design was intended to enable deployment within existing urban environments while supporting passenger, cargo and emergency medical applications through a common airframe.
The company believes this combination of operational flexibility and capital efficiency could help it compete in global markets.
Certification pathway comes into focus
The completion of PT-01 marks the beginning of the formal certification process.
The company plans to publicly unveil the aircraft in the coming weeks before commencing ground and flight testing.
Certification efforts will initially focus on approval from India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), followed by regulatory engagement in international markets.
Achieving certification remains one of the most significant challenges for the global eVTOL sector, with manufacturers working to demonstrate safety, reliability and operational readiness before commercial deployment.
