The Indian government is preparing a ₹4,000 crore emergency credit scheme to support the country’s airline industry. The move comes at a time when airlines are experiencing increased costs of operations and disruption by global geopolitical tensions.
The West Asian flights have been reduced and the prices of jet fuel have increased, which has had a great effect on the airline revenues. The situation is more difficult as this area contributes to a significant portion of international traffic of Indian carriers.
The main points of the plan include
• Airlines loans supported by the government
• Up to ₹1,000 crore support per airline
• Additional ₹500 crore possible if promoters invest too
The program is intended to offer urgent financial assistance and assist airlines with the temporary liquidity problems.
SpiceJet will probably be the greatest beneficiary of this assistance. The airline is already experiencing severe economic pressure, as several of its planes have been grounded because of the outstanding payments and technical difficulties. Although it has raised funds recently, the company remains in poor cash flow and fleet utilization.
IndiGo, on the other hand, is better off. Its strong market share and improved financial stability have enabled it to manage the increased costs more efficiently than its rivals.
Several industry concerns persist, including
• Banks are still wary of giving loans to airlines
• History of failure of other airlines such as Jet Airways and Go First have made risk perception higher
• Margins are still under pressure due to high fuel costs and uncertainty around the world.
Although the government action will be a relief, it will probably take time to solve the structural problems in the aviation industry. The concern of profitability, high operating costs, and reliance on world fuel prices are still among the issues.
Conclusion
The 4000 crore bailout package is a bailout to the ailing airlines. Nevertheless, recovery in the long run will be based on the improved cost management, the stabilized global situation, and the continued travel demand.
