India’s aviation sector is projected to handle around 500 million passengers annually by 2030, underscoring the industry’s rapid growth trajectory, according to Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) CEO BVJK Sharma. The sector is further expected to scale to nearly 1 billion passengers by 2047, driven by sustained demand and large-scale fleet expansion.
India is already among the world’s top three domestic aviation markets, with passenger traffic reaching approximately 412 million in 2025, reflecting strong post-pandemic recovery and rising travel demand.
The growth is being supported by over 1,000 aircraft orders, expanding airport infrastructure, and government-led connectivity initiatives. Industry leaders highlighted that domestic air traffic could initially grow at around 17% year-on-year, indicating robust near-term momentum.
With increasing investments and a focus on scalable airport ecosystems, India is positioning itself as a key global aviation hub, entering what experts describe as a defining phase of long-term sectoral expansion.
