Lufthansa is set to temporarily remove its Airbus A380 from flights to Los Angeles and San Francisco in early 2027, redirecting capacity towards India and Southeast Asia as it adjusts its long-haul network to match seasonal demand patterns.
According to aviation publication DJ's Aviation, the German airline will replace A380 services on the two US West Coast routes with the smaller Airbus A350-900 for nearly two months during the Northern Winter 2026-27 schedule. The move will allow Lufthansa to deploy additional A380 capacity on routes from Munich to Bangkok and India.
The changes do not represent a withdrawal from either US market. Lufthansa will continue operating daily flights to both destinations using different aircraft.
Capacity moves towards Asia
The temporary redeployment will run between 11 January and 27 February 2027, with Asia receiving most of the additional A380 capacity.
The largest adjustment will take place on the Munich-Bangkok route, where Lufthansa plans to operate two daily A380 services between 16 January and 26 February 2027, compared with the current single daily rotation.
According to DJ's Aviation, the second daily A380 operation is scheduled for six weeks and forms part of a targeted increase in seat capacity rather than a permanent network expansion.
The move reflects Lufthansa's focus on markets where leisure and premium travel demand remains strong during the European winter season.
India gains additional superjumbo services
India is also set to benefit from the airline's revised deployment strategy.
Key changes include:
- Five of seven weekly Munich-Mumbai services will switch from the Airbus A350-900 to the Airbus A380 between 11 January and 27 February 2027.
- Daily Airbus A380 operations between Munich and Delhi will continue throughout the winter schedule.
- Additional A380 deployment follows Lufthansa's previously outlined winter network plans, which identified India as a priority market for increased capacity.
The airline's decision highlights the continued strength of demand on Indian routes, where larger aircraft allow Lufthansa to add seats without increasing flight frequencies.
California routes to operate with A350 aircraft
While the A380 will disappear temporarily from Los Angeles and San Francisco, Lufthansa will maintain daily connectivity to both cities.
Under the revised schedule:
- Los Angeles will be served daily by the Airbus A350-900 from 11 January to 26 February 2027.
- San Francisco will also transition to daily Airbus A350-900 operations during the same period.
- The A350 services will replace schedules previously operated by a mix of six weekly A380 flights and one weekly A350 service.
The aircraft substitution reflects a seasonal adjustment rather than a broader reduction in Lufthansa's US network presence.
A380 remains central to Lufthansa's fleet strategy
The temporary shift underlines the continued importance of the Airbus A380 within Lufthansa's long-haul operations.
Although the four-engine aircraft is no longer widely viewed as the industry's most efficient widebody, its high seat capacity has become valuable for airlines facing aircraft delivery delays and operating at slot-constrained airports.
For Lufthansa, the aircraft continues to play a strategic role from its Munich hub, enabling the carrier to maximise passenger capacity on routes where demand exceeds the capabilities of smaller widebody aircraft.
The early 2027 adjustments illustrate how airlines are increasingly deploying capacity dynamically across regions, directing larger aircraft towards markets delivering stronger seasonal demand while maintaining network coverage through fleet flexibility.
