Air India has commenced operations from the new Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram, marking a significant transition in air travel infrastructure for the Visakhapatnam region.
In a press release, Air India said all flights to and from Visakhapatnam will now operate from the new airport at Bhogapuram while continuing to use the existing airport code VTZ.
The move shifts the airline's operations to a new aviation facility designed to support passenger growth and improve travel efficiency through modern infrastructure and technology-enabled services.
Delhi connectivity remains unchanged
Despite the operational shift, Air India said its existing schedule between the region and the national capital will continue without changes.
The airline will operate:
- 14 weekly flights between Bhogapuram and Delhi
- Connectivity to major domestic destinations through Air India's network
- Access to international routes through the airline's hub operations
According to the airline, the Delhi services will continue to provide onward connections for passengers travelling across India and overseas.
New terminal focuses on passenger experience
The new terminal has been developed with a strong focus on operational efficiency and passenger convenience.
Spread across 77,342 square metres, the facility incorporates a range of automated and technology-driven systems aimed at reducing processing times and improving passenger flow.
Key features of the terminal include:
- 22 check-in counters
- 18 self-baggage drop units
- Advanced passenger screening systems
- Modern baggage handling infrastructure
- Seven aerobridges
The combination of self-service facilities and upgraded baggage systems is expected to streamline airport operations while supporting higher passenger volumes.
Infrastructure upgrade for the region
The transition to Bhogapuram gives travellers access to a larger and more modern airport environment compared with previous facilities serving the region.
Air India said the airport has been designed to offer enhanced comfort while strengthening operational capabilities. The addition of multiple aerobridges, automated baggage facilities and advanced screening equipment reflects the broader trend towards technology-led airport infrastructure across India's aviation sector.
The launch also expands the operational footprint of the new international airport as airlines begin shifting services to the facility.
A new chapter for air travel in Andhra Pradesh
The start of Air India's operations from Bhogapuram represents an important milestone for the airport's commercial rollout.
With regular Delhi services already in place and modern terminal infrastructure now operational, the airport is positioned to support future passenger growth and strengthen connectivity for travellers in northern Andhra Pradesh.
For Air India, the transition ensures continuity of service while providing passengers with access to upgraded facilities designed to deliver a smoother airport experience.
