India's monsoon intensified on Sunday, bringing heavy rainfall to several parts of the country, disrupting flight operations in Mumbai, triggering multiple weather alerts across eastern and southern states, and providing relief from humid conditions in Delhi.
According to PTI, Mumbai witnessed the most severe impact after overnight rainfall forced the temporary suspension of runway operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) maintained a red alert for the city, warning of continued heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.
Mumbai bears the brunt of intense rainfall
Heavy rain and strong winds disrupted aviation operations in India's financial capital, affecting both arriving and departing flights.
According to Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), runway operations were suspended for about an hour after adverse weather conditions developed at around 10.17 am.
The airport operator said:
- Strong wind gusts of up to 42 knots affected runway operations.
- Reduced visibility caused by heavy rainfall impacted aircraft movements.
- Runway operations resumed after weather conditions improved approximately an hour later.
According to PTI, the disruption resulted in:
- Average departure delays of around 75 minutes
- Average arrival delays of at least 28 minutes
Official rainfall data also showed several parts of Mumbai received more than 200 mm of rain, while some locations recorded up to 300 mm over the previous 24 hours.
IMD maintains red alert for Mumbai
The IMD retained a red alert for Mumbai on Sunday, forecasting persistent heavy rainfall along with isolated spells of extremely heavy showers.
The weather department has warned residents to remain cautious as the active monsoon conditions continue to influence western India.
Odisha braces for landfall of monsoon system
In eastern India, a well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression, prompting authorities in Odisha to place all districts on high alert.
According to the IMD, the system is expected to cross the north Odisha coast between Chandbali and Digha over the next day.
The weather department said the system is likely to bring:
- Heavy rainfall across Odisha
- Heavy rainfall in parts of West Bengal
- Strong monsoon conditions along the eastern coast
Kerala issues orange and yellow alerts
Monsoon rainfall remained widespread across Kerala, leading the IMD to issue multiple district-level alerts.
According to the department:

- Orange alerts will cover Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod on 7 July.
- Yellow alerts remain in force across several northern districts.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority advised people living in areas vulnerable to landslides, mudslides and flash floods to move to safer locations if instructed by local authorities.

Active monsoon expected to persist
The latest weather pattern highlights the widening reach of the southwest monsoon across India, with aviation, transport and public services facing disruptions in several regions.
