Myanmar Airways International (MAI) has introduced a fully wireless inflight entertainment (IFE) platform across its fleet, becoming the first airline in Myanmar to deploy a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) entertainment solution.
According to ETTravelWorld, the airline has partnered with Aerohub and Aeroplay to enable passengers to stream entertainment directly on their personal devices through the aircraft's onboard Wi-Fi network. The rollout forms part of MAI's broader digital transformation programme aimed at modernising onboard services while reducing reliance on traditional hardware.
Entertainment delivered through passengers' own devices
The new platform allows travellers to access content using their smartphones, tablets or laptops without requiring seatback entertainment screens.
Passengers can connect through a QR code and access a library of content over the aircraft's onboard Wi-Fi network.
Key features of the platform include:
- Wireless access to inflight entertainment using personal devices
- QR code-based entry for passengers
- Streaming of Hollywood and international films
- Television programmes and music content
- Destination information integrated into the platform
- Passenger engagement features designed to improve the onboard experience
The wireless solution has been developed by Aerohub, while Aeroplay is providing entertainment content for the platform.
Part of a broader digital strategy
Tanes Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of Myanmar Airways International, described the launch as an important step in the airline's digital transformation journey.
According to the airline, the new platform supports its objective of improving the passenger experience through innovation, operational efficiency and service standards aligned with international practices.
The airline also said the system offers a scalable, hardware-light approach compared with conventional inflight entertainment installations.
Technology partners highlight operational benefits
Sameet Sirdeshmukh of Aerohub said the wireless platform has been designed to deliver a reliable passenger experience while helping airlines lower aircraft weight, reduce maintenance complexity and expand deployments more efficiently.
Subir Arora of Aeroplay Entertainment said the collaboration focuses on offering a balanced entertainment catalogue suited to different passenger demographics, with an emphasis on regional relevance and regularly refreshed content.
Regional airlines continue shifting to wireless IFE
The deployment reflects a wider trend across the aviation industry, with more regional carriers adopting wireless inflight entertainment systems instead of traditional seatback hardware.
According to ETTravelWorld, airlines are increasingly turning to BYOD platforms to lower maintenance requirements, reduce onboard equipment and offer passengers greater flexibility in accessing entertainment throughout their journey.
