Wizz Air has announced plans to introduce Starlink-powered inflight connectivity across its entire fleet in 2027, marking a significant technology upgrade for the European ultra-low-cost carrier as demand for seamless onboard internet access continues to grow.
The airline said the rollout will make it the first European ultra-low-cost carrier to deploy Starlink's inflight internet technology across its network, bringing satellite-based connectivity to millions of passengers travelling on its services.
According to the airline, installations will begin at the start of next year, with new-generation aircraft expected to be equipped with Starlink technology as the programme progresses.
Carrier expands onboard digital offering
The announcement reflects a broader shift within the airline industry, where connectivity is increasingly becoming a key part of the passenger experience.
Wizz Air said passengers will be able to access high-speed, low-latency internet connectivity while flying at cruising altitude, enabling them to remain connected throughout their journey.
The airline expects the technology to provide a consistent onboard experience regardless of route or destination.
Key elements of the planned rollout include:
• Fleetwide Starlink deployment targeted for 2027
• Installation programme beginning next year
• Connectivity across new-generation Wizz Air aircraft
• High-speed internet access at cruising altitude
• Low-latency network performance designed for continuous connectivity
The carrier has not announced further operational details regarding service availability or passenger access models.
Low-cost model meets next-generation connectivity
Ian Malin, Chief Commercial Officer of Wizz Air, said the airline views connectivity as an extension of its strategy to make travel more accessible.
In comments released alongside the announcement, Malin said passengers should not have to choose between affordable air travel and reliable internet access while flying.
He described the Starlink partnership as an opportunity to bring advanced connectivity capabilities to Wizz Air customers while maintaining the carrier's low-cost positioning.
The move comes as airlines increasingly invest in onboard digital services to meet changing passenger expectations, particularly among travellers who wish to remain connected for work, communication and entertainment during flights.
SpaceX expands aviation connectivity footprint
The connectivity solution will be provided through Starlink, the satellite internet network operated by SpaceX.
Starlink has been expanding its presence within the aviation sector as airlines seek alternatives to traditional inflight connectivity systems.
According to Wizz Air, the technology is designed to provide reliable internet access throughout a flight, reducing connectivity interruptions that can occur with conventional systems.
Jason Fritch, Vice President of Starlink Enterprise Sales at SpaceX, said the partnership is intended to enhance the travel experience for passengers while enabling continuous connectivity for both travellers and crew members.
He noted that the technology was developed to support high-speed internet access throughout the flight journey, from departure through to arrival.
Industry competition intensifies around passenger experience
The adoption of satellite-based connectivity has become an increasingly important area of competition among airlines globally.
Passengers are placing greater emphasis on digital services, including internet access, streaming capabilities and uninterrupted communication while travelling.
For low-cost carriers in particular, connectivity is becoming a differentiating feature as airlines seek to balance affordability with evolving customer expectations.
Wizz Air's planned deployment signals growing confidence in satellite-powered connectivity solutions and highlights the role technology is playing in reshaping onboard passenger experiences.
The initiative also demonstrates how connectivity services, once associated primarily with premium airlines, are increasingly moving into the low-cost segment.
Fleet modernisation supports rollout
The airline said every new-generation Wizz Air aircraft is expected to be equipped with Starlink technology, supporting a standardised passenger experience across the fleet.
Integrating connectivity during aircraft delivery and fleet expansion programmes may also help simplify deployment as airlines modernise their operations and onboard systems.
The announcement aligns with Wizz Air's broader focus on fleet development and operational efficiency, while adding a new customer-facing technology component to its product offering.
