Vietravel Airlines Signs Letter of Intent for 50 Airbus Jets in Major Fleet Expansion

Airlines has taken a major step toward expanding its fleet, signing a letter of intent with Airbus to acquire fifty new generation aircraft. The agreement covers twenty A220s and thirty aircraft from the A321 family, with the A321 order expected to include a mix of A321neo and A321XLR variants. Deliveries under the deal are scheduled to begin in 2029.

The agreement was formalized on September 10, 2026, at the Élysée Palace in Paris, during an official visit to France by Vietnam's General Secretary and President To Lam. French President Emmanuel Macron was also present as the deal was exchanged, alongside senior leadership from T&T Group, Vietravel Airlines' parent company, and Airbus International. The signing formed part of a broader set of aviation and economic cooperation agreements reached during the visit, which also saw Vietnam Airlines sign a separate memorandum of understanding with Airbus for five additional A350-900 widebody jets, slated for delivery between 2033 and 2034.

At this stage, the Vietravel Airbus arrangement remains a letter of intent rather than a firm, finalized order. An Airbus representative noted that both parties are pleased to have signed the commitments and are looking forward to finalizing the contracts in the period ahead.

For Vietravel Airlines, the planned purchase marks the next phase of a transformation strategy that began after the carrier joined the T&T Group ecosystem in late 2024. Since then, the airline has been steadily building out an owned fleet, starting with the delivery of its first Airbus A321 in June 2025. The new fifty aircraft agreement signals a shift into long term fleet planning, with the airline aiming to expand its route network and strengthen its ability to operate more independently and efficiently.

The choice to bring in both A220s and A321-family jets reflects a deliberate network strategy. The A220, which will be an entirely new aircraft type for Vietravel, is expected to support a "market opening" approach  allowing the airline to launch direct connections to cities and regions that currently have little or no regular air access. Its smaller capacity makes it well suited for routes where a full size A321 would be oversized for demand. The A321 family, meanwhile, will continue to serve higher demand domestic and regional routes, while the inclusion of the long range A321XLR variant opens the door to significantly longer international routes using a single aisle aircraft.

Currently, Vietravel Airlines operates a modest fleet of five aircraft, one A320-200 and four A321-200s  serving domestic routes across Vietnam as well as international connections to Bangkok and Shenzhen. The carrier has said it plans to add further aircraft during the second half of 2026, with an eye toward eventually scaling operations up to somewhere between 80 and 90 flights per day.

If the letter of intent is converted into a firm order and executed as planned, it would represent a substantial leap for an airline that only began building its own fleet a little over a year ago. T&T Group has previously indicated ambitions to grow Vietravel Airlines to around fifty aircraft by 2030, meaning this single agreement could account for the bulk of that long term target.

The broader significance of the deal extends beyond Vietravel itself. New direct air connections stemming from the expanded fleet are expected to improve accessibility between markets, cut travel times, and support stronger passenger and cargo flows. In turn, this is likely to contribute to trade, tourism, and investment growth in the regions the airline serves, adding to the momentum of Vietnam's broader aviation sector development.

Avionyz will continue tracking this story and bring you further updates as the agreement moves from letter of intent toward a finalized contract.
