Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (KIA) has crossed a major aviation milestone by handling more than 400 million cumulative passengers since beginning operations in 2008, reflecting the airport’s rapid transformation into one of India’s most important domestic and international aviation gateways.
According to airport authorities, more than 44 million passengers travelled through the airport during the financial year 2025-26, driven by strong growth in both domestic and international traffic.
The achievement was reviewed during a recent board meeting of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), where airport management highlighted sustained operational expansion despite continuing volatility across the global aviation industry.
Bengaluru strengthens position as aviation hub
The latest milestone highlights Bengaluru’s growing role not only as a technology capital but also as a major global travel and connectivity centre.
Airport officials attributed the sustained growth to the city’s expanding influence across sectors including:
- Information technology
- Startups and innovation
- Research and development
- Manufacturing
- International business services
Bengaluru Airport currently connects passengers to dozens of domestic and international destinations, positioning it as a critical gateway for southern India.
The airport has also emerged as a key transit and business travel hub as airlines continue expanding long-haul connectivity from the city.
Passenger growth remains strong
According to airport authorities, passenger demand remained robust throughout FY26 despite broader operational pressures affecting the aviation sector globally.
The airport recorded growth across:
- Domestic passenger traffic
- International passenger volumes
- Daily aircraft movements
- Cargo throughput
- Long-haul connectivity
On peak travel days, Bengaluru Airport handled:
- More than one lakh passengers daily
- Several hundred aircraft movements
Officials said operational efficiency, infrastructure expansion and improved airline connectivity helped support the airport’s continued growth trajectory.
The airport has steadily expanded its capacity over recent years through terminal upgrades, technology integration and network expansion.
Cargo business records major expansion
Alongside passenger growth, cargo activity at Bengaluru Airport also recorded strong performance during FY26.
The airport handled more than 5 lakh metric tonnes of cargo, according to officials.
Cargo categories included:
- Pharmaceuticals
- Electronics
- Flowers and agricultural products
- Fruits
- Automobile components
- E-commerce shipments
Industry observers say the cargo expansion reflects Bengaluru’s growing importance in global supply chains, especially in high-value manufacturing and technology-linked exports.
One of the airport’s notable achievements during the year involved the export of millions of flower stems and agricultural products to international markets.
The airport has increasingly positioned itself as a major logistics and cargo centre supporting both industrial and consumer supply chains.
Infrastructure and connectivity driving growth
Airport authorities said improved infrastructure and expanded international connectivity played a major role in reaching the 400 million passenger milestone.
Industry experts note that Bengaluru Airport has benefited from:
- Expansion of international routes
- Increased airline capacity deployment
- Modern passenger terminals
- Technology-driven airport operations
- Growth in premium and business travel demand
The airport has also received multiple international recognitions for passenger experience, airport services and infrastructure quality.
Analysts say Bengaluru’s relatively newer airport infrastructure and long-term expansion planning have helped it compete with leading regional hubs across Asia and the Middle East.
India’s aviation growth story gains momentum
Aviation analysts view Bengaluru Airport’s milestone as part of a broader transformation underway across India’s aviation sector.
India remains one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, supported by:
- Rising middle-class travel demand
- Expanding international connectivity
- Rapid urbanisation
- Growth in domestic tourism
- Increasing business travel
- Fleet expansion by airlines
The growth of airports such as Bengaluru also reflects increasing decentralisation of international air traffic beyond traditional metro gateways like Delhi and Mumbai.
Southern India, in particular, has seen rising demand for direct global connectivity driven by technology exports, multinational corporate activity and international workforce mobility.
Future expansion likely to continue
Industry observers expect Bengaluru Airport to continue expanding strongly over the coming years as airlines add more domestic and long-haul international routes.
The airport’s growing role in cargo logistics, business aviation and international connectivity is also expected to strengthen further as Bengaluru consolidates its position as a global technology and innovation centre.
Airport authorities indicated that sustained infrastructure development and operational scaling remain central priorities as passenger traffic continues increasing.
Crossing the 400 million passenger mark therefore represents more than a symbolic milestone. It highlights how Bengaluru Airport has evolved from a regional gateway into one of India’s most strategically important aviation and logistics hubs within less than two decades of operation.
