India's largest airline by market share, IndiGo, has formally entered a new leadership chapter with Willie Walsh assuming charge as Chief Executive Officer. The appointment, announced by the airline on Monday after being confirmed in March, places one of the aviation industry's most experienced executives at the helm as IndiGo pursues international expansion while managing a complex operating environment.
Walsh, the former Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), brings more than four decades of aviation leadership spanning airlines, airline groups and the global industry body. According to the airline, he will work closely with the board and management team to build on IndiGo's operational foundations and guide its next phase of growth.
Welcoming Walsh, Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of IndiGo, said the appointment comes at a defining point in the airline's journey.
"As IndiGo enters its third decade and stands poised for the next phase of its growth, I am delighted to officially welcome Willie as the airline's Chief Executive Officer," Bhatia said in the company's announcement.
Walsh described his arrival as timely, pointing to India's expanding aviation market and IndiGo's rapid rise over the past two decades.
"IndiGo has built a remarkable legacy over the last two decades, establishing itself amongst the largest airlines in the world in a short span of time," he said.
He added that India is one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets and said the opportunities ahead for the airline are significant.
"I look forward to working with the entire IndiGo team to build on the airline's success and take it to greater heights globally," Walsh said.
Walsh begins his tenure as IndiGo reshapes parts of its international strategy while responding to external pressures affecting the aviation sector.
Shortly before his appointment took effect, the airline announced it would discontinue its wide-body operations from 25 October and end its damp lease agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways by the end of October.

The new CEO also inherits an airline recovering from a series of operational disruptions over the past year.
During December 2025 and the weeks that followed, IndiGo cancelled more than 4,500 flights after a severe pilot shortage coincided with the implementation of revised Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) rules. According to earlier reporting, the disruption affected hundreds of thousands of passengers and resulted in a record penalty from India's aviation regulator, placing pressure on the airline's reputation for operational reliability.
The carrier has since continued operating amid persistent industry challenges, including geopolitical uncertainty, restricted airspace and elevated operating costs.
Walsh is widely regarded as one of global aviation's most experienced executives, having led several major airlines and industry organisations over the past four decades.
