Madhya Pradesh to add Airbus H160 helicopter to VIP fleet by 2027

Madhya Pradesh is set to induct an Airbus H160 helicopter into its VIP aviation fleet by January 2027, marking a shift towards a more modern and efficient platform for government operations.

The move comes as the state looks to replace ageing assets and improve reliability, comfort and operating efficiency in its aviation unit, according to Indian Defence News.

Shift driven by ageing fleet and rising costs

The planned induction follows increasing maintenance requirements for the state’s existing Eurocopter EC 155 helicopter, which has been in service for around 13 years, Indian Defence News reported.

Officials indicated that rising upkeep costs and ageing systems prompted the decision to transition to a newer aircraft with improved performance and lower maintenance demands.

The H160, developed by Airbus Helicopters, remains relatively limited in India, with only a handful of units currently in operation, according to the report.

Advanced features and performance capabilities

Officials from the state aviation department described the H160 as a highly advanced helicopter capable of all-weather and night operations, with a focus on operational flexibility.

The aircraft is equipped with modern avionics and a voice-controlled cabin system, alongside a biplane stabiliser designed to enhance safety and stability, according to Indian Defence News.

It can reach speeds of up to 175 knots, or about 325 kilometres per hour, with a range of approximately 890 kilometres and an operating ceiling of 20,000 feet.

Focus on comfort and efficiency

The helicopter features a cabin designed to balance passenger comfort with operational efficiency, with seating capacity for up to eight passengers.

Officials also highlighted its low noise profile, positioning it as suitable for VIP transport and sensitive operating environments.

Gradual modernisation of government aviation

The induction of the H160 is expected to strengthen the state’s aviation capabilities while aligning with broader efforts to modernise government fleets.

While the number of such helicopters in India remains limited, the adoption by a state government signals growing interest in newer platforms that combine performance with lower lifecycle costs.

The delivery timeline points to a gradual transition, with the success of the upgrade likely to depend on operational performance and cost efficiencies once the aircraft enters service.
