SpiceJet faces fresh flight delays in Delhi

Several SpiceJet flights faced operational disruptions, prompting Delhi Airport authorities to coordinate with the airline and other stakeholders to assist affected passengers.

In an advisory posted on X, Delhi Airport said its teams were coordinating with SpiceJet and other stakeholders to support passengers and help normalise the situation.

The airport thanked passengers for their patience and cooperation, advising them to contact the airline for the latest flight information or approach airport staff for assistance.

The latest disruption comes as SpiceJet continues to face financial and operational challenges, Zee Business reported.

On September 15, SpiceJet flights SG 5111 and SG 5105 from Delhi to Dubai were delayed after an aircraft was grounded due to operational reasons. The airline said it was arranging alternative flights for affected passengers and taking steps to minimise the inconvenience.

More than 100 passengers from the two SpiceJet flights staged a protest at Delhi airport following prolonged delays.

Flight SG 5111 was scheduled to depart Indira Gandhi International Airport at 8:30 am on September 15, while SG 5105 was scheduled for 10:10 pm that day. Neither flight had departed as of 2 pm on September 16.

A SpiceJet spokesperson said alternate flights were being arranged to accommodate affected passengers and that the airline was making every effort to minimise the inconvenience caused.

The latest flight disruptions come as SpiceJet continues to face financial and operational challenges. On September 3, Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu said the airline was seeking funds through the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS). He added that the government regularly engages with airlines to understand their difficulties and has also been discussing SpiceJet’s operational situation.

“Every month, we engage with all the airlines regarding whatever difficulties or issues or challenges they have. SpiceJet also, in the same regard, we have been meeting,” Naidu said, ANI reported. “And we have been pushing them to step up their operations, especially mainly the financial side of it. And they have also assured that they will be doing it quite soon."

In May, the Union Cabinet approved the ECLGS 5.0 scheme to provide targeted credit support to Indian airlines amid financial stress caused by factors including higher aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, airspace closures and reduced operations, particularly on international routes.

SpiceJet has finalised lease agreements with three aircraft operators to induct 20 aircraft as it prepares to expand operations during the upcoming Winter Schedule.

The airline will induct 15 Boeing and five Airbus aircraft under damp- and wet-lease agreements. The aircraft are expected to join SpiceJet’s fleet in phases between mid-October and mid-November, ahead of the winter travel peak beginning with the Durga Puja period.
