Noida International Airport completes operational trial ahead of commercial launch

Noida International Airport has completed a full-scale aircraft turnaround trial as part of its final operational readiness programme, marking a significant milestone ahead of the launch of commercial services later this month.

The airport said the exercise was conducted on 9 June in partnership with IndiGo and several airport stakeholders under its Operational Readiness, Activation and Transition (ORAT) programme. According to the airport, the trial was designed to simulate a complete aircraft turnaround process and assess how different systems, infrastructure and teams perform under real operating conditions.

The development comes as the greenfield airport prepares to commence domestic commercial operations from 15 June.

Trial focused on end-to-end operational coordination

According to a statement issued by Noida International Airport, the exercise tested coordination across multiple operational functions on the airside, where aircraft movement, servicing and passenger-related activities take place.

Key areas covered during the trial included:

• Testing of Visual Docking Guidance Systems (VDGS) used to guide aircraft safely to terminal gates.
• Evaluation of passenger boarding bridges and ground power systems.
• Assessment of integrated baggage handling operations.
• Simulation of cargo handling processes.
• Testing of in-flight catering logistics.
• Review of various ground handling activities.
• Evaluation of refuelling scenarios as part of operational preparedness.

The airport said the exercise was aimed at validating the readiness of critical infrastructure and ensuring smooth coordination among different service providers before passenger operations begin.

Navigation systems also revalidated

Beyond ground operations, the airport said the trial included the re-validation of key flight navigation systems.

According to the statement, the exercise covered:

• Re-validation of the Instrument Landing System (ILS).
• Testing of Required Navigation Performance (RNP) approach procedures.

ILS is a precision landing aid used by aircraft during approach and landing, particularly in reduced visibility conditions. RNP procedures enable aircraft to follow highly accurate flight paths using satellite-based navigation systems.

The airport said these checks formed part of broader efforts to ensure operational and regulatory readiness ahead of launch.

Final phase before commercial operations

The turnaround exercise is one of a series of advanced ORAT activities being conducted before the airport opens to scheduled passenger traffic.

ORAT programmes are widely used across the aviation industry to test airport systems, processes and stakeholder coordination before commercial operations begin. These exercises typically involve airlines, ground handlers, security agencies and airport operators working together in simulated operating environments.

Noida International Airport said the latest trial was intended to ensure seamless interaction between operational interfaces and minimise disruptions once flights commence.

With domestic services scheduled to begin on 15 June, the successful completion of the turnaround trial moves the airport a step closer to becoming operational, as authorities focus on ensuring that infrastructure, navigation systems and passenger-handling processes are ready for regular commercial traffic.
